I have a problem with this that is too hard to explain to fit into the current format. I will put it here, and hope someone else can answer it and put it into the page.
- A desire is what a person will strive to achieve. (Axiom)
- A good desire is a desire that will help achieve other desires. (Axiom)
- What you should do is what someone with a good desire would do. (Axiom)
- What you should do is what someone who has a desire that will help achieve other desires would do. (Substituting good desire in 3 with its definition in 2)
- What you should do is what someone who will strive to help achieve other desires would do. (Substituting desire in 4 with its definition in 1)
- What you should do is what someone who will strive to help achieve desires would do. (The desire that "other" excludes is no longer mentioned, so "other" can be taken out)
- What you should do is help achieve desires. (Hard to explain, but I think you can understand that step)
That last step is, as I understand it, the definition of preference utilitarianism. 67.182.169.172 18:27, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
