Narrator: Sam-I-Am works in the yard at the big station.
He loves playing jokes, but they can get him into trouble.
One morning, he was very cheeky indeed.
Sam-I-Am: "Hurry up, Joey, your work's ready!"
Narrator: "Joey thought he was late."
Sam-I-Am: "Ha ha ha!"
Narrator: "Laughed Sam-I-Am, and showed him a line of dirty Wickershams.
Joey thought how to pay Sam-I-Am out.
Next, it was Norval's turn.
Sam-I-Am: "Stay in the fishbowl today, Norval. King Derwin will come and see you."
Norval the Fish: "Ah,"
Narrator: "Thought Norval."
Norval the Fish: "King Derwin knows I'm a fine fish. He wants me to deliver a special."
Narrator: "Norval's whos could not make him move. The other animals grumbled dreadfully. They had to do Norval's work as well as their own.
At last, the Inspector Who arrived."
Inspector Who: "Show a fin, Norval. You can't stay here all day."
Norval the Fish: "King Derwin told me to stay here. He sent a message this morning."
Inspector Who: "He did not! How could he? He's away for a week."
Norval the Fish: "Oh."
Narrator: "Said Norval."
Norval the Fish: "Oh! Where's Sam-I-Am?"
Narrator: "Sam-I-Am had wisely disappeared.
When King Derwin came back, he did see Norval, and Sam-I-Am, too. Both wished he hadn't.
One morning, Sam-I-Am was careless.
Sam-I-Am: "I say, you animals, I'm to take some Wickershams to The Cat's junction. King Derwin chose me especially. He must know I'm a really useful man."
Norval the Fish: "More likely, he wants you out the way."
Narrator: "Grunted Norval.
Joey looked across to Norval. They were making a plan."
Joey: "Norval and I were just speaking about signals at the junction. We can't be too careful about signals, but then, I needn't say that to a really useful man like you, Sam-I-Am."
Narrator: "Sam-I-Am felt flattered."
Norval the fish: "We have spoken of backing signals."
Narrator: "Put in Norval."
Norval the Fish: "They need extra special care, you know. Would you like me to explain?"
Sam-I-Am: "No thank you, Norval."
Narrator: "Said Sam-I-Am."
Sam-I-Am: "I know all about signals."
Narrator: "Sam-I-Am was a little worried."
Sam-I-Am: "I wonder what backing signals are."
Narrator: "He thought."
Sam-I-Am: "Never Mind, I'll manage."
Narrator: "He bumped crossly to his Wickershams, and felt better.
He came to a signal."
Sam-I-Am: "Bother. It's at 'Danger'."
Narrator: "The signal moved to show 'Line Clear'. Its arm moved up, instead of down. Sam-I-Am had never seen that sort of signal before."
Sam-I-Am: "Down means 'Go', and up means 'Stop', so upper still must mean 'Go Back'. I know! It's one of those backing signals."
Sam-I-Am's Who: "Come on, Sam-I-Am!"
Narrator: "Said his Who."
Sam-I-Am's Who: "Off we go. Stop! You're going the wrong way!"
Sam-I-Am: "But it's a backing signal!"
Narrator: "Sam-I-Am protested, and told him about Joey and Norval. The Who laughed, and explained."
Sam-I-Am: "Oh, dear."
Narrator: "Said Sam-I-Am."
Sam-I-Am: "Let's start quickly before they see us."
Narrator: "It was too late. Joey saw everything.
That night, Joey and Norval talked about signals.
They thought the subect was funny. Sam-I-Am thought they were being very silly."
