An American Tail is a 1986 American Animated Musical Drama Comedy film directed by Don Bluth, produced by Amblin Entertainment and distributed by Universal Studios. The film was released on November 21, 1986. It's the first Animated Feature Film to win all Eleven Academy Awards including Best Picture and the first Traditionally Animated Film to win the Category.

John Lasseter, Pete Doctor, Joe Ranft, Andrew Stanton and David Kirschner came up with the Original Concept for An American Tail. While all the Animal Characters were animated from scratch the Human Characters were animated using the Rotoscoping Technique, in which sequences were shot in live action and then traced onto Animation Cels.


The Musical Score for the Film is composed by James Horner, with Songs composed and written by Richard and Robert Sherman. The Song "Somewhere Out There", composed and written by the Shermans, won a Grammy Award, a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award.


An American Tail premiered at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on November 20, 1986 and was an Immediate Success, both Financial and Critical. The film was released the following day in Theaters all over the United States and was an unexpected Smash-Hit.
