A Big Surprise For Percy[]

  • Alec Baldwin: Percy was working in the coal yards. He was feeling bored and lonely with only the silly freight cars for company.
  • Percy's Driver: Cheer up, Percy.
  • Alec Baldwin: Said his driver.
  • Percy's Driver: Sir Topham Hatt has told me that we must be here again tomorrow. We've just got to get the best of a bad situation.
  • Percy: I'll try, sir.
  • Alec Baldwin: Sighed Percy. Next morning, the freight cars started teasing Percy.
  • Freight Cars: Percy, Percy, green and small, he's no use to us at all, around the yard to puff and blow but on a hills, he's oh so slow!
  • Percy: Be quiet!
  • Alec Baldwin: Then he took the freight cars to the coal hopper to be loaded up. Percy still felt glum as he puffed up to the top of the hill. He parked his freight cars and then set off back down the mines. Not even a cheerful sight of Bertie the Bus could bring a smile to Percy's face.
  • Bertie: What's the matter, Percy?
  • Alec Baldwin: Asked Bertie.
  • Percy: Nothing exciting ever happens. That's the matter.
  • Alec Baldwin: Sighed Percy.
  • Percy: It's just coal, coal, coal and cars, cars, cars. I'm bored, bored, bored.
  • Bertie: Excitement is surprising.
  • Alec Baldwin: Observed Bertie.
  • Bertie: You never know when it'll happen. Otherwise, it wouldn't be exciting. Tootle peep.
  • Percy: It would be surprising if something surprising happened.
  • Alec Baldwin: Muttered Percy. Later, he stopped by the water tower for a drink.
  • Toby: Hello, Percy. How are things?
  • Alec Baldwin: Asked Toby.
  • Percy: Boring.
  • Toby: Well, why not have a few spins on a turntable? You'll like that.
  • Alec Baldwin: Said Toby.
  • Percy: I think it just make me feel giddy.
  • Alec Baldwin: Percy's driver interrupted.
  • Percy's Driver: Stop gossiping, you two.
  • Toby: Cheer up, Percy. You soon know about cars than any other engine. That'll be exciting.
  • Alec Baldwin: Called Toby. The freight cars were still grumpy and there was more of them then ever.
  • Freight Cars: You much too small to pull one of us. We want another engine who would be struggling at the hill all night! All night, all right, you can puff and blow, but on a hill, you're still slow! Ha, ha!
  • Percy: S-s-slow yourself!
  • Alec Baldwin: Stuttered Percy.
  • Freight Cars: Temper, temper.
  • Alec Baldwin: Giggled the cars. Percy decided to simply carry on.
  • Percy's Driver: Go to it, Percy.
  • Alec Baldwin: Shouted his driver. The freight cars were still joking.
  • Freight Cars: Too slow, more power, here all night, tomorrow too!
  • Percy: Be quiet!
  • Alec Baldwin: Said Percy angrily. Then there was trouble. A coupling broke.
  • Freight Cars: Surprise, surprise! Catch us if you can!
  • Percy: Oh, no!
  • Alec Baldwin: Cried Percy.
  • (The freight cars speed away from Percy and pass Bertie)
  • Alec Baldwin: Percy's driver phoned the signalman and the yard foreman told Sir Topham Hatt what was happening.
  • Yard Foreman: They're heading for the big hill! It'll slow them down but they roll back again right into the village.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Then we'll just have to stop them, won't we?
  • Alec Baldwin: The chase was on.
  • (Sir Topham Hatt and Bertie go after the runaway cars)
  • Alec Baldwin: As they approach the hill, they overtook the freight cars. Sir Topham Hatt and Bertie screeched to a halt, and waited for them near the top. The hill slow the freight cars right down to a stand still. Then the men quickly put wooden blocks behind their wheels so they couldn't roll backwards. The freight cars were now secured. Just then, Percy arrived.
  • Bertie: Well, what do you think of that?
  • Alec Baldwin: Joked Bertie.
  • Bertie: A good chase is always exciting.
  • Percy: It was certainly a surprise.
  • Alec Baldwin: Decided Percy.
  • Percy: And you are right, Bertie. A really useful engine should never be surprise by surprise.

Put Upon Percy[]

  • Alec Baldwin: Percy puffed grumpily into the yards. He was feeling put upon and said so.
  • Percy: I feel put upon.
  • Alec Baldwin: He complained to Thomas. Thomas was confused.
  • Thomas: Put upon what? The rails?
  • Percy: No, put upon with work. Driver says he is too.
  • Thomas: Put upon. What a silly saying.
  • Alec Baldwin: Replied Thomas. But Annie and Clarabel liked it and they sang about it, too.
  • Annie and Clarabel: (singing) Percy's been put upon, put upon, put upon. Percy's been put upon, poor old Percy.
  • Alec Baldwin: Percy is being put upon.
  • Percy: I am, I am, I am.
  • Alec Baldwin: He collected metal from the foundry, coal from the yards, flour from the mills, rock from the quarries and fuel from the depot. Then he delivered it all to the docks. Next he collected some empty freight cars.
  • Freight Cars: Who's this dirty little engine?
  • Alec Baldwin: Cried the freight cars.
  • Freight Cars: We want Thomas or Duck.
  • Alec Baldwin: Percy ignored them.
  • Percy: Put upon, put upon. That's what I am.
  • Alec Baldwin: That night all the engines laughed at him.
  • Thomas: We can see what's put upon you.
  • Alec Baldwin: Said Thomas.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Silence!
  • Alec Baldwin: Said Sir Topham Hatt.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Percy, you done a good day's work. Now get a good night's rest.
  • Percy: Yes, sir. Thank you, sir.
  • Alec Baldwin: Next morning, he took some freight cars to the coal yards. Then he had to push some empty freight cars to the mine shaft. When he arrived, there was trouble. The foreman spoke to his driver.
  • Foreman: The freight cars are stuck in the mechanism. All they need is a good push.
  • Percy's Driver: We'll do it right away.
  • Alec Baldwin: Percy shunted back to were a large canvas barrier was used to protect his line from loose rocks. Percy charged into the line of freight cars too fast and too hard.
  • Percy: Oh, no.
  • Alec Baldwin: Gasped Percy. The freight cars broke free, but ran out of control to the mines below.
  • Freight Cars: On, on, faster, faster!
  • Alec Baldwin: The silly freight cars yelled. Then there was trouble again.
  • (The freight cars hit the pole and we hear a siren and the mine rumbling)
  • Miner: Get out of here fast! The mine's collapsing!
  • (The mine explodes with impact)
  • Percy's Driver: We'll just have to make a run for it, Percy!
  • Alec Baldwin: Called his driver.
  • Percy: There's going to be an avalanche!
  • Alec Baldwin: Wailed Percy. And he was right. Worse still, the track he was on began to crumble.
  • Percy: Oh, help!
  • Alec Baldwin: Wailed Percy. Then he remembered something he had seen earlier.
  • Percy: There's the canvas barrier by the track. That might save us.
  • Alec Baldwin: They were just in time.
  • (The avalanche starts to bury Percy completely)
  • Alec Baldwin: Percy was right. The canvas did indeed save them, but the miners didn't know that.
  • Foreman: The avalanche has buried an engine and its crew.
  • Alec Baldwin: Shouted the foreman.
  • Foreman: We must help them.
  • Alec Baldwin: When Percy had been rescued, Sir Topham Hatt spoke to his driver and fireman then to Percy.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Driver told me how brave you were, Percy. As a reward you will be repainted at the works.
  • Percy: Oh thank you, Sir.
  • Alec Baldwin: When he returned, Percy's coat glistened in the sun.
  • Thomas: I'm sorry we teased you, Percy.
  • Alec Baldwin: Said Thomas.
  • Thomas: You were certainly put upon by that avalanche.
  • Percy: Yes indeed. But just look at my new coat of paint. Now, I don't mind that being put upon me.

Toby and The Flood[]

  • Alec Baldwin: It had been raining hard for weeks. Toby was feeling miserable. Everywhere was wet, wet, wet. His branch line runs to a village. The water and the river had risen with the rain. Only the great wall known as a dam was stopping the water from overflowing. Percy arrived just as Toby was about to inspect the dam for any damage.
  • Percy: Driver tells me it may be dangerous up there. Please be careful, Toby.
  • Alec Baldwin: Said Percy.
  • Toby: I'll try.
  • Alec Baldwin: Replied Toby bravely. Percy watched anxiously as Toby trundled away. His journey took him over a wooden bridge at the end of the village. The river surged dangerously beneath it. Harold the Helicopter was inspecting the dam as Toby arrived.
  • Toby's Driver: Be brave Toby.
  • Alec Baldwin: Called his Driver.
  • Toby's Driver: We had to cross to the other side.
  • Alec Baldwin: The dam did not look safe at all. Toby was very worried. Soon, he knew why.
  • Toby's Driver: The dam's breaking up! We must warn everyone!
  • Alec Baldwin: Toby shunted back as fast as his wheels would let him. Percy was waiting anxiously for Toby by the bridge. The river had risen so high that the bridge was in danger of collapsing.
  • Toby's Driver: The dam's breaking up. We must find high ground.
  • Alec Baldwin: Shouted Toby's driver.
  • Percy: Your only chance is to cross the bridge.
  • Alec Baldwin: Called Percy.
  • Toby: It doesn't look safe to me.
  • Alec Baldwin: Wailed Toby.
  • Toby's Driver: It's our only chance.
  • Alec Baldwin: Said his driver.
  • Toby's Driver: If the dam breaks, we'll be done for!
  • Alec Baldwin: Toby was halfway across the bridge when disaster struck.
  • (The dam breaks apart)
  • Toby: Help!
  • Alec Baldwin: Called Toby.
  • Percy's Driver: We'll follow him on our line. It needs the river further down.
  • Alec Baldwin: As Toby floated helplessly on the floodwaters, they passed a sign that made them shudder: Beware The Waterfall.
  • Toby's Driver: If we go over that waterfall, we're doomed.
  • Alec Baldwin: Then they saw Harold who swooped low and shouted urgently to them.
  • Harold: We're going to drop a rope to you. Attach it to yourself, quickly now!
  • Alec Baldwin: And they did, to one of Toby's buffers. Just then, Percy arrived. Harold flew over to him.
  • Harold: Catch a rope and pull Toby to safety!
  • Alec Baldwin: He called.
  • (Percy with all his might pulls Toby and the bridge to safety)
  • Alec Baldwin: Toby was safe at last. When the floods were over and the dam mended, the villagers had a big party for Toby, hosted by Sir Topham Hatt.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: You were very brave, Toby.
  • Toby: Thanks to Harold.
  • Percy: I could never been so brave, Toby.
  • Toby: Oh, I'm sure you would be, but you never know till you tried.
  • Alec Baldwin: Percy rather hope he never had to.

Double Teething Troubles[]

  • Alec Baldwin: Bill and Ben the Tank Engine twins work in the clay mines and quarries near brendam docks. Their work is important but they can be hot and dirty. Sometimes this makes the twins naughty. One morning, they were feeling very naughty indeed.
  • Bill: That's my line of cars!
  • Alec Baldwin: Huffed Bill.
  • Ben: It's not, it's mine!
  • Alec Baldwin: Snorted Ben.
  • Ben: Yours it's over there.
  • Bill: It's mine!
  • Ben: It's not!
  • Bill: It's mine!
  • Ben: It's not!
  • Alec Baldwin: Their friend BoCo was worried.
  • BoCo: Stop quarreling you two or the only thing you had left to share is...
  • (Bill and Ben run into each other and derail)
  • BoCo: Trouble.
  • Bill: Silly!
  • Alec Baldwin: Snapped Bill.
  • Ben: Silly yourself!
  • Alec Baldwin: Grumbled Ben.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Bill and Ben, behave yourselves.
  • Alec Baldwin: Said Sir Topham Hatt.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: It's clear to me that we need another diesel to help out. There's only one available. He's new and keen to make an impression.
  • BoCo: If I were you.
  • Alec Baldwin: Whispered BoCo.
  • BoCo: I can back to work right away.
  • Alec Baldwin: Meanwhile Sir Topham Hatt was having doubts about his own decision.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: I hope the new diesel doesn't cause even more confusion. He's bound to have teething troubles.
  • Alec Baldwin: And he was right.
  • Derek: Oh, my grease and oil. I wasn't expecting this hill. Oh, what's that?
  • (Derek breaks down)
  • Alec Baldwin: BoCo came to the rescue.
  • Derek: Sorry.
  • Alec Baldwin: Said the diesel.
  • Derek: I'm all hot and bothered. I've got teething troubles, you know.
  • Alec Baldwin: The news soon spread.
  • Thomas: Apparently it's teething troubles.
  • Alec Baldwin: Confided Thomas to Percy.
  • Percy: Hey, you two. This new diesel's got a toothache. Good luck.
  • Bill: Why does Percy want to wish us good luck?
  • Alec Baldwin: Asked Bill.
  • Ben: Because he knows we'll need it. A diesel with a toothache must be the worst diesel of all.
  • Alec Baldwin: Then their manager spoke to them.
  • Manager: You will take your loads to the docks and rest there tonight. There's a lot of hard work to do tomorrow.
  • Alec Baldwin: It was dark when the twins reached the docks. They left the freight cars by the key and scurried off to the shed.
  • Duck: You two looked glum.
  • Alec Baldwin: Sighed Duck.
  • Bill: It's the new diesel's fault.
  • Alec Baldwin: Replied Bill.
  • Bill: He's got a toothache.
  • Duck: He hasn't got a toothache he's got teething troubles. That means he's new and this causes some problems. In his case it's his cooling system.
  • Alec Baldwin: Next morning, the twins heard an unfamiliar whistle.
  • Bill and Ben: Oh, no! It's the new Diesel!
  • Alec Baldwin: And it was.
  • Derek: Hello. I'll sort this train out. You take the front and I'll push 'em behind. Ha, ha. What fun.
  • Alec Baldwin: All went well as they set off. Then they came to a hill.
  • Ben: Come on, come on! Push harder, you silly diesel!
  • Alec Baldwin: Shouted Ben. But the diesel couldn't push any harder.
  • Derek: (pants) I'm overheating again.
  • (Derek breaks down once again)
  • Bill: Oh, pah!
  • Alec Baldwin: Snorted Bill.
  • Bill's Driver: (sighs) You know what?
  • Alec Baldwin: Sighed the driver.
  • Bill's Driver: Let's try and finish the journey anyway. It means we'll have to pull the diesel as well. Can you do it twins?
  • Bill: We'll try.
  • Alec Baldwin: And sure enough, they could. That night, Sir Topham Hatt came to see them.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Well done, Bill and Ben. I sent the new diesel back to the works. Can you manage alone?
  • Bill and Ben: Oh, yes sir.
  • Bill: BoCo.
  • Alec Baldwin: Whispered Bill.
  • Bill: I'm sorry we were rude to you.
  • Ben: And...
  • Alec Baldwin: Added Ben.
  • Ben: The new diesel was really quite friendly.
  • Duck: And you know what friends do?
  • Alec Baldwin: Murmured Duck.
  • Bill and Ben: No, what?
  • Duck: They always say good night to each other.
  • Alec Baldwin: And so they did, but they still chattered about the diesel and his teething troubles all night long.

Busy Going Backwards[]

  • Alec Baldwin: Toad the break van was feeling sad. Everywhere he look, he could see engines and coaches moving steadily forwards. They all look confident and cheerful. One day, he decided to talk to Oliver the Great Western Engine.
  • Toad: I'm always going backwards, Mr. Oliver. I have forward thinking views. I could be a leader if you know what I mean.
  • Gordon: You can't be a leader without a train to follow you. You don't have a train.
  • Alec Baldwin: Gordon said. Toad felt sadder still. Oliver wanted to help,
  • Oliver: You're a really useful break van, Toad. You help me break and you keep my freight cars in order when we go down hills.
  • Toad: I know, Mr. Oliver, but it'll be so exciting to go forwards for a change instead of always things sliding away from me.
  • Alec Baldwin: The freight cars were cross with Toad.
  • Freight Car 1: Who he to started complaining?
  • Freight Car 2: He's lucky to be look after us.
  • Freight Car 3: Let's teach him a lesson.
  • Alec Baldwin: The freight cars were simply carried up their plan when they reach Gordon's Hill. When they were nearly at the top, they play their tricks.
  • Freight Cars: Ready, steady, go!
  • Alec Baldwin: And they jerked and a coupling which broke.
  • Freight Cars: We're making your wish come true, Toad! Follow the leader!
  • Alec Baldwin: Yelled the freight cars. Toad was still in a state of shock so he didn't know what to think. And he couldn't ask the conductor, he had jumped clear.
  • Freight Cars: Faster, faster, as fast as you want!
  • Alec Baldwin: Screamed the freight cars. Suddenly, Toad found it fun but the fun was soon over. A crossing lay ahead and the gates were closed, Toad couldn't stop. Worst still, Toad now realize he was on the wrong track. There ahead was Gordon! The signalman change the points just in time.
  • Freight Cars: On, on, faster!
  • Alec Baldwin: Cried the freight cars. Suddenly, he saw James pulling a long slow train.
  • Toad: Oh, my goodness! Help, save me!
  • Alec Baldwin: A quick thinking shunter did just in time.
  • James: What was that?!
  • Alec Baldwin: Explained James. The signalman warned the stationmaster at the next station.
  • Signalman: There's a runaway coming!
  • Stationmaster: We'll send them into the sidings.
  • Toad: Help, help!
  • Alec Baldwin: Called Toad again. Toad saw some buffers.
  • Toad: Those were stop me.
  • Alec Baldwin: But the points in the buffers weren't safe.
  • Toad: Oh, no! I'm back on the main line!
  • Alec Baldwin: Meanwhile Oliver was racing to the rescue.
  • Oliver: I must catch Toad. I must.
  • Alec Baldwin: Toad sped past Henry. More danger lay ahead. Men were working on the bridge, but they had been warned about the runaway Toad and his freight cars. They diverted him onto old sidings, straight into a muddy pool.
  • (Toad falls into a muddy pool)
  • Toad: (gurgling) Stopped at last.
  • Alec Baldwin: Oliver arrived and when he saw Toad, he can only smile.
  • Oliver: A pond is the only place for a Toad I suppose.
  • Alec Baldwin: That night, Toad spoke to Oliver.
  • Toad: I'm sorry, Mr. Oliver, if I cause to any embarrassment.
  • Oliver: That's all right, Toad. So what do you think of going forwards?
  • Toad: It was fun.
  • Alec Baldwin: Decided Toad.
  • Toad: But from now on, I'd be happy to look forward to the future, busy going backwards so to speak.

Oliver's Find[]

  • Alec Baldwin: Oliver and his break van Toad liked working in the big yards, but one morning, Toad noticed that Oliver was unhappy. He decided to find out why.
  • Toad: Uh, excuse me, Mr. Oliver. It seems to me that things are not well with you, uh, if you forgive me for mentioning it.
  • Oliver: You're quite right, Toad. All I do is shunt these freight cars onto the turntable. I longed for a nice run. It's what an engine really means.
  • Toad: Uh, quite so, Mr. Oliver. May I suggest that you speak to Sir Topham Hatt about your problems?
  • Alec Baldwin: But Oliver said nothing. He just grew unhappier and he was rough with the freight cars.
  • Freight Car #1: You're no good, Oliver!
  • Freight Car #2: You're dangerous!
  • Freight Car #3: We want Percy!
  • Oliver: Percy's far too busy to be bothered with the likes of you!
  • Alec Baldwin: And Oliver bumped the freight cars hard.
  • (The freight cars fall into the turntable)
  • Workman: You silly engine!
  • Alec Baldwin: Shouted a workman.
  • Workman: It'll take a long time to repair this turntable which'll cause confusion and delay!
  • Alec Baldwin: That night, Sir Topham Hatt arrived.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Oliver, you had caused confusion. I thought you can control freight cars. You should work the mail train for a while. Maybe the night air will clear your smokebox.
  • Oliver: Yes, sir. Sorry, sir.
  • Alec Baldwin: Said Oliver sadly.
  • Oliver's Driver: Cheer up, old chap.
  • Alec Baldwin: Said his driver.
  • Oliver's Driver: The mail train run is a fine run for an engine like you.
  • Alec Baldwin: Oliver smiled, but he still felt he had left everyone down. His driver took him along the coastal run with the mail train. The fresh air couldn't help but brighten Oliver's spirits. They made good speed until it was time to collect some important mail from Harold the Helicopter.
  • Oliver: Come on, Harold.
  • Alec Baldwin: At last Harold landed.
  • Harold: Sorry I'm late, great western. Had any uh bit of a problems with one of my arms. Kept letting me down when I was uh meant to be up. You know how it is.
  • Oliver's Driver: We know that we'll be late for our first run.
  • Alec Baldwin: Replied Oliver's driver. Soon, they were on their way again. Ahead was a red signal light. Oliver didn't realized that the signalman had dozed off. Oliver whistled several times, but the signal stayed red.
  • Oliver's Driver: There must be something wrong with that signal. We'll go slowly and stop by the signalbox.
  • Alec Baldwin: Said his driver. But they never reached it. The points before the signalbox were switched to an old track. They were going the wrong way. Oliver's fireman was concerned.
  • Oliver's Fireman: We need to find the water tower soon.
  • Alec Baldwin: Instead they saw an old station. Disaster lay ahead.
  • (Oliver crashes into a shed)
  • Alec Baldwin: Meanwhile, Sir Topham Hatt was worried.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Oliver has not returned. We'll send out a search party.
  • Alec Baldwin: Soon he was high in the sky with Harold.
  • (Harold looks for Oliver)
  • Sir Topham Hatt: There they are.
  • (Oliver is spotted and Harold lands)
  • Oliver's Driver: It wasn't Oliver's fault.
  • Alec Baldwin: Sighed the driver.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: I'm aware of that. I'm just glad to see you were all safe.
  • Alec Baldwin: Then he saw something. It was an empty old house beside the station. He went to inspect it.
  • (Sir Topham Hatt checks the old house)
  • Alec Baldwin: When he returned, he spoke to Oliver.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: You have found another attraction for our island. We'll make this house as good as new and visitors can have tea and crumpets there.
  • Oliver: Hmm.
  • Alec Baldwin: Sighed Oliver.
  • Oliver: Getting lost can be interesting but being found can be much nicer. Especially what an engine feels really useful.

Sir Topham Hatt[]

  • (Gordon's whistle tooting)
  • Children: (singing) His name is Sir Topham Hatt. Some people say he's - Stout!! Rather rotund, really quite round. But he doesn't see it like that.
  • Girl: He's considered he's a gentleman of merit.
  • Boy: With a railway exquisitely fine.
  • Children: (singing) But his main aim is to see that his trains run right on time. Sir Top, Sir Topham Hatt. He's the head of the railway. There is no doubt about that controller of the line. It's as plain as plain can be for everyone to see that it's the Fat Controller's railway. One day he was having breakfast, when Thomas decided to call. He arrived unexpected and quite uninvited straight through the dining room wall.
  • Boy: My goodness! Said the controller. Why didn't you knock at the door?
  • Children: (singing) This won't do at all just look at my wall and my breakfast on the floor. Sir Top, Sir Topham Hatt. He's the head of the railway there is no doubt about that controller of the line. It's plain as plain can be for everyone to see that it's the Fat Controller's railway. He's so proud of his engines each and everyone. And though he's strict and meticulous, favorites he has none. If ever there is trouble, you know who will be there.
  • Girl: If there's ever a crash a smash or a muddle, he's there on the double, no trouble.
  • Children: (singing) Cause it's the Fat Controller's railway. When Henry stayed in the tunnel, everyone tried to push. But Sir Topham Hatt would have none of that.
  • Boy: My doctor has forbidden me to push.
  • Children: (singing) And one day the wind blew his hat off.
  • Girl: A goat in the field saw his chance.
  • Children: (singing) He just picked up the hat, said thank you for that and ate it up for lunch. Sir Top, Sir Topham Hatt. He's the head of the railway. There is no doubt about that controller of the line. It's plain as plain can be for everyone to see that it's the Fat Controller's railway. Sir Top, Sir Topham Hatt. He's the head of the railway.
