- Narrator (Michael Angelis): Percy was working in the coal yards. He was feeling bored and lonely with only the silly trucks for company.
- Driver: Cheer up, Percy. (Narrator (Michael Angelis): Said his driver.) The Fat Controller has told me that we must be here again tomorrow. We've just got to make the best of a bad situation.
- Percy: I'll try sir. (Narrator (Michael Angelis): Sighed Percy.)
- Narrator (Michael Angelis): Next morning, the trucks started teasing Percy.
- Trucks: (singing) Percy, Percy, green and small, he's no use to us at all, around the yards he'll puff and blow but on the hills, he's oh so slow!
- Percy: Be quiet!
- Narrator (Michael Angelis): Then he took the freight cars to the coal hopper to be loaded up. Percy still felt glum as he puffed up to the top of the hill. He parked his freight cars and then set off back down the mines. Not even the cheerful sight of Bertie the Bus could bring a smile to Percy's face.
- Bertie: What's the matter, Percy? (Narrator (Michael Angelis): Asked Bertie.)
- Percy: Nothing exciting ever happens, that's the matter. (Narrator (Michael Angelis): Sighed Percy.) It's just coal, coal, coal and trucks, trucks, trucks!! I'm bored, bored, bored!
- Bertie: Excitement is surprising. (Narrator (Michael Angelis): Observed Bertie.) You never know when it'll happen. Otherwise, it wouldn't be exciting. Tootle peep.
- Percy: It would be surprising if something surprising happened. (Narrator (Michael Angelis): Muttered Percy.)
- Narrator (Michael Angelis): Later, he stopped by the water tower for a drink.
- Toby: Hello Percy. How are things? (Narrator (Michael Angelis): Asked Toby.)
- Percy: Boring.
- Toby: Well, why not have a few fast spins on the turntable? You'll like that. (Narrator (Michael Angelis): Said Toby.)
- Percy: I think it would just make me giddy.
- Driver: (Narrator (Michael Angelis): Percy's driver interrupted.) Stop gossiping, you two.
- Toby: Cheer up, Percy. You'll soon know about trucks than any other engine. That'll be exciting. (Narrator (Michael Angelis): Called Toby.)
- Narrator (Michael Angelis): The trucks were still grumbling and there was more of them then ever.
- Trucks: You're much too small to pull all of us. We want another engine, or will be struggling at the hill all night! All night! Alright! You can puff and blow! But on that hill, you're still too slow! (laugh)
- Percy: (stuttering) Slow yourself! (Narrator (Michael Angelis): Stuttered Percy.)
- Trucks: Temper, temper. (Narrator (Michael Angelis): Giggled the trucks.)
- Narrator (Michael Angelis): Percy decided to simply carry on.
- Driver: Go do it, Percy! (Narrator (Michael Angelis): Shouted his driver.)
- Trucks: (Narrator (Michael Angelis): The trucks were still joking.) Too slow! More power! Here all night! Tomorrow too!
- Percy: Be quiet!! (Narrator (Michael Angelis): Said Percy angrily.)
- Narrator (Michael Angelis): Then there was trouble. A coupling broke.
- Trucks: Surprise, surprise! Catch us if you can!
- Percy: Oh no! (Narrator (Michael Angelis): Cried Percy.)
- (The trucks speed away from Percy and pass Bertie)
- Narrator (Michael Angelis): Percy's driver told the signalman, and the yard foreman told The Fat Controller what was happening.
- Yard Foreman: They're heading for the big hill! It'll slow them down, but they may roll back again right into the village. (Narrator (Michael Angelis): Said the foreman.)
- The Fat Controller: Then we'll just have to stop them, won't we? (Narrator (Michael Angelis): Said Sir Topham Hatt Firmly.)
- Narrator (Michael Angelis): The chase was on.
- (The Fat Controller and Bertie go after the runaway cars)
- Narrator (Michael Angelis): As they approached the hill, they overtook the trucks. The Fat Controller and Bertie screeched to a halt, and waited for them near the top. The hill slowed the trucks right down to a stand still. Then the men quickly put wooden blocks behind their wheels so they couldn't roll backwards. The trucks were now secured. Just then, Percy arrived.
- Bertie: Well, what do you think of that? (Narrator (Michael Angelis): Joked Bertie.) A good chase is always exciting.
- Percy: It was certainly a surprise. (Narrator (Michael Angelis): Decided Percy.) And you are right, Bertie. A really useful engine should never be surprised by a surprise.
